Amsterdam is located in the Western Netherlands, in the province of North Holland, although it is not its capital which is Haarlem. The river Amstel ends in the city center and connects to a large number of canals that eventually terminate in the IJ. Amsterdam is famous for its canals, beautiful houses, so-called coffee shops, and Red Light District, but there’s plenty more to this liberal city than most visitors realize. The city is located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country but is not its capital, which is Haarlem. The metropolitan area comprises much of the northern part of the Randstad, one of the larger conurbations in Europe, with a population of approximately 8 million. Amsterdam fans out south from the Amsterdam Central railway station and Damrak, the main street off the station. The oldest area of the town is known as De Wallen (English: “The Quays”). It lies to the east of Damrak and contains the city’s famous red-light district.
